Our History

The site on which Stoke Row Village Hall stands was bequeathed to the residents of Stoke Row in 1914. The donor required the villagers to construct “a room for the purpose of any recreation which the Trustees in their discretion may think desirable.” (Quoted from “The Indenture”). It was used by local soldiers returning from the 1st World War to enable them to have a meeting place in the local community. The Hall has evolved over the years, even being used as a temporary Post Office.

In 1964, H.R.H. Prince Philip shared a lunch with older members of the village, held at the hall as part of The Maharajah’s Well Centenary Celebrations.

The Maharajah’s Well

In the mid 1800s, the Maharajah of Benares agreed to fund the sinking of a well in the village of Stoke Row, having been moved by the plight of the villagers and their lack of drinking water during a drought. A story of Indian and British royalty and a small village in the Chiltern Hills.
